Effectiveness of zinc in modulating perinatal effects of arsenic on the teratological effects in mice offspring Biol. Res.
Ahmad,Mohammad; Wadaa,Mohammad A. M; Farooq,Muhammad; Daghestani,Maha H; Sami,Ahmed S.
Exposure to arsenic via drinking water is considered as a worldwide problem. Studies have shown that arsenic exposure during pregnancy affects embryogenesis and offspring development in rats and mice. Zinc as a micronutrient regulates many physiological functions, including an antioxidative role under various toxic conditions. However, studies on the perinatal protective effect of zinc on offspring need further attention. The present study was designed to evaluate the potential protective role of zinc in mitigating the adverse effects in the offspring of arsenic exposure during pregnancy. The arsenic (40mg/kg body weight) and zinc (4% w/v) doses formed the only drinking fluid source for the experimental groups of dams during the perinatal period of the...

Embriotoxic effects of maternal exposure to Tityus serrulatus scorpion venom J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Barão,A. A. S.; Nencioni,A. L. A.; Dorce,V. A. C..
Tityus serrulatus is the most venomous scorpion in Brazil; however, it is not known whether its venom causes any harm to the offspring whose mothers have received it. This study investigates whether the venom of T. serrulatus may lead to deleterious effects in the offspring, when once administered to pregnant rats at a dose that causes moderate envenomation (3mg/kg). The venom effects were studied on the 5th and on the 10th gestation day (GD5 and GD10). The maternal reproductive parameters of the group that received the venom on GD5 showed no alteration. The group that received the venom on GD10 presented an increase in post-implantation losses. In this group, an increase in the liver weight was also observed and one-third of the fetuses presented...

Prenatal management, pregnancy and pediatric outcomes in fetuses with septated cystic hygroma BJMBR
Sanhal,C.Y.; Mendilcioglu,I.; Ozekinci,M.; Yakut,S.; Merdun,Z.; Simsek,M.; Luleci,G..
It has been reported that, compared with simple increased nuchal translucency, fetal cases with septated cystic hygroma (CH) are more likely to face perinatal handicaps. However, pediatric outcomes and proper prenatal counseling for this anomaly have not yet been truly defined. We performed this study to determine pregnancy and pediatric outcomes of fetuses with septated CH. We searched records for cases with septated CH and collected data for structural abnormalities, karyotype analysis, and pregnancy outcomes. Fetuses born with septated CH were also evaluated for their pediatric outcomes. Sixty-nine fetuses with septated CH were enrolled in the study. Results showed that chromosomal abnormalities were present in 28 fetuses (40.6%), and the most common...

Renal failure and neonatal death following snakebite during pregnancy: a case report J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Adam,G. K.; Hussein,S. M.; Adam,I..
A thirty-five-year-old Sudanese woman (gravida 4, para 3), at 34 weeks gestational age, presented with snakebite in her right leg. Examination of the cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems revealed no abnormalities. Her blood urea was 58 mg/dl; creatinine, 2.6 mg/dl; whole blood clotting time, 5:35 minutes. The patient was diagnosed as having acute renal failure and was then managed conservatively. She received polyvalent antivenom serum intravenously. On the next day, she delivered prematurely and the baby passed away due to respiratory distress. There was no postpartum bleeding and the patient's clotting time was 5:30 minutes. She was discharged from the hospital after 7 days when her clinical, biochemical and...
